Bootleg awareness!

Photobucket
As Most of you have noticed, Bootleg figures have become a big problem recently. Heck, My very first figure was a bootleg.

This needs to stop, and the only way this can happen is if people don’t buy bootlegs.

Some tips for Identifying Bootlegs

General-

-More than 30% below retail price. It is SO hard to make a profit with most figures if the figure is priced this low and real (Not to say that all figures below 30% are bootlegs.)

– material – Many times bootleggers can’t get the same kind of Material the original was made out of, so many times the material is shiny or the wrong shade..

-selling before the actual product is out- I think that’s self-explanitory

-different positions- Eyes facing wrong way, hand pointing wrong way, etc…

Nendoroids

It is close to IMPOSSIBLE to sell a nendoroid for less than $20 and still make a profit (excluding petits)\

Sellers (Ebay)-

-they use offical shots – be sure to ask the seller for pictures of the product, otherwise they just use “official shots”

-Has less than 98% seller feedback. even so, I personally wouldn’t go ordering without checking at 99.5% even more so if they’ve sold over 200 Items.

Please check feedback please though. I know a seller who sometimes got bad feedback on issues that Should have contected him first, and that severely hurt them.

-check for official sticker on the box! Many times bootleggers have no “official” stickers on their Items, or they just use a shiny sticker instead of a holographic sticker.

-I (personally) always check if they say that they are selling authentics, because if they do, chances are better that they are than not. (I have yet to see a seller who says they sell authentic items but really doesn’t.)

    Thanks for the Blacklist!

I Support your clause on bootleg figures too. It just prevents the money from going back to the people who deserve it.

There are cases of replacing the Holographic stickers with “Original” Shiny stickers.
I guess thats a hitting point too?

I just wish that more conventions would kick out dealers that are selling bootlegs. There was a huge problem with bootlegged figures at Anime Central this year, and it had me up in flames. What angered me further was that no-one knew who to contact about it, and when I tried contacting e-mails from their website, no-one cared enough to get back to me even after the fact!

Online I know there will always be bootleg sellers and the most you can do is report them and avoid… at conventions, it’s just beyond ridiculous.

I wish I had found your tips earlier on! I ordered my first nendoroid off ebay last year and it turned out to be a bootleg (luckily, the seller and I were both understanding people and came to a compromise). Along with your tip on material quality, you should also watch out for the paint quality. It should be smooth, not chipped or lumpy. And as far as ebay goes, you should note that some bootleg sellers now add ‘china version’ into their description. Since my first experience, I’ve bought 4 other nendoroids (off ebay) and could not be happier. Thanks for your tips! :D
